The Region
Working in Central Florida cattle country
Central Florida has a more active registered Angus and commercial Angus-cross industry than most producers outside the region realize. Hardee and Highlands counties in particular have serious seedstock operations — operations that care about conception rate data, that synchronize recipients correctly, and that approach ET as an investment rather than an experiment.
The Okeechobee corridor adds a different dimension: Brahman and Brahman-influenced commercial programs that have specific considerations for synchronization timing, heat tolerance, and recipient selection. Brahman recipients require the same fundamental management approach as British breeds, but they tend to express heat stress effects more dramatically in summer programs. This region keeps me busy through summer windows that slow down in other parts of the state.
Heat stress is the dominant management challenge across all Central Florida programs from late April through October. Summer programs are doable — I run them — but they require appropriate expectations and extra attention to recipient condition going in. A well-managed recipient in good body condition during July heat will not perform the same as she would in a November program, and that is a conversation worth having before the program is booked, not after transfer day.
